ADDIE with SAM: Structure Meets Speed

in Instructional Design

ADDIE with SAM: Structure Meets Speed in Instructional Designis a multimedia explainer video developed for Simon Webb’s IDT 603 portfolio at Western Illinois University. The project addresses common misconceptions surrounding the ADDIE and Successive Approximation Models by reframing them not as competing approaches, but as complementary frameworks used together in contemporary instructional design practice.

The video presents ADDIE as a systematic yet flexible framework for analysis, planning, development, implementation, and evaluation, while positioning SAM as an iterative methodology that supports rapid prototyping, collaboration, and continuous refinement. Rather than contrasting the models, the project demonstrates how structured analysis and agile iteration can be integrated into a hybrid workflow that reflects real-world design conditions.

Designed using evidence-based multimedia principles, the video was produced with Canva, Adobe Photoshop, Audacity, and Adobe Premiere Pro to ensure clarity, accessibility, and cognitive efficiency across desktop and mobile viewing contexts. Visual pacing, segmentation, and narration alignment were intentionally structured to support comprehension and manage cognitive load.

As a portfolio artifact, this project demonstrates the ability to translate instructional design theory into a polished, accessible multimedia product while applying research-informed decision-making, iterative development, and reflective practice.
