Project 1 Reflection
Design Approach
Project 1 represents the culmination of a comprehensive instructional design cycle, encompassing research and planning, development, testing, and refinement. This work brought together theory and hands-on design, demonstrating how models such as ADDIE, SAM, and Universal Design for Learning (UDL) can guide real-world instructional projects.
Throughout the process, I moved back and forth between analysis, prototyping, and user feedback, using survey data and peer observations to make concrete improvements. Each iteration resulted in clearer navigation, improved accessibility, and a more consistent visual presentation. The final product not only functions smoothly but also communicates my professional identity in a way that's intuitive and visually engaging.
Accessibility and Equity
Accessibility and equity were woven into every design decision. My goal was to meet the WCAG 2.1 AA and Section 508 standards, ensuring that all text, color, and navigation elements were accessible to diverse users. Testing included screen reader checks, keyboard navigation trials, and color contrast validation.
Beyond meeting requirements, I wanted the site to reflect my belief that accessibility is about respect—not just compliance. The finished portfolio invites all users, regardless of ability or device, to engage fully and comfortably with the material.
Technical Proficiency
This project strengthened my command of HTML, CSS, and responsive design. I utilized CSS clamp functions to create flexible typography, applied reusable style tokens for color and spacing, and ensured consistency across various screen sizes. Chrome DevTools became an essential companion, helping me identify layout issues, monitor load times, and validate accessibility tags.
Through this process, I gained a deeper understanding of the balance between aesthetics and usability. I learned how design elements such as line spacing, alignment, and contrast can directly impact comprehension. The outcome is a website that feels both polished and purposeful, where technology enhances learning rather than distracting from it.
Professional Growth and Impact
Project 1 was not just a technical challenge, but a bridge between academic learning and professional application. It validated my readiness for roles such as Instructional Designer, Learning Experience Designer, and Training Technology Specialist. What began as a technical challenge evolved into a broader exploration of communication, user empathy, and visual storytelling.
By translating abstract frameworks into a tangible learning product, I gained deeper confidence in presenting ideas clearly to both stakeholders and learners.
Future Direction
The lessons from Project 1 will directly inform my future work. As I begin Project 2, I plan to expand the portfolio's interactive elements and integrate more advanced user testing. My ongoing focus is to design instructional materials that are accessible, meaningful, and adaptable—digital spaces that connect creativity with functionality and provide every learner with an equal opportunity to succeed.
I look forward to the exciting journey ahead.
